Overview

Langtang Valley & Gosaikunda Lake Overview

Langtang Valley Trek is part of the Langtang National Park located in the Eastern part of Nepal bordering Tibet. The starting town of Syabrubesi is also the way to the Tibetan border that leads to Mount Kailash and Mansarovar pilgrimage tours. This is a trek not as famous as the Everest or Annapurna routes, which makes it tempting for the ones who love avoiding crowds and big groups and more quiet time in the mountains. The first part of the trek is easy and a gradual walk all the way to Kyanjin Gompa and back with easy gradient shifts. This bit is great for first timers as well as the ones who wish to take it easy. The second part of the trek to Gosaikunda Lake has some steep hikes and is strenuous. The walk back to the roadhead at Dhunche from the lake is easy and passes through the fine teahouses of Cholang Pati and Sing Gompa.

Gosaikunda is a holy lake for Hindus and is believed to be the place Lord Shiva struck his trident to extract water to drink and cool his stinging throat after consuming poison to save the world. Ancient Hindu scriptures refer to Samudra Manthan(Churning of the ocean), which is directly linked to Gosaikunda Lake. A lot of piligrims come to visit this lake and undertake it as a pilgrimage especially during August on the occasion of Janai Purnima.

There are 2 ways to end the trek either by retracing to Sing Gompa and then on to the nearest roadhead at Dhunche, or the other option of crossing over the Lauribinayak pass and descending into Helambu region. Crossing the pass elongates the trek by a couple of days.Great views of Mt. Langtang Lirung, Dorje Lhakpa, Manaslu range, Himal Chuli, Ganesh Himal range, and Tibetan white peak from the pass.

Overall, this is a great trek with superb Himalayan views and some challenges enroute. A refreshing difference from the other trekking routes in Nepal. The teahouses tend to be more basic at a few places on this trek esp at higher altitudes. Langtang Valley was heavily affected with the entire Langtang village wiped out during the Earthquake of April 2015. It has slowly hopped back to normalcy. Signing up for this trek will directly benefit the village dwellers by bringing in revenue to this region.
