Khecheopalri Lake, originally known as Kha-Chot-Palri, is a lake situated close to Khecheopalri town, 147 km west of Gangtok in West Sikkim at an elevation of 1700m. The formation of the lake is estimated to be 3500 years old and is amidst pristine forest land.
Khecheopalri gets its name from Khecheo and Palri.’Khecheo’ signifies “flying yoginis” or Taras. Palri signifies “palace”. It has many legends associated with it and is religiously significant to both Buddhists and Hindus. It is said that a Lepcha girl named Nenjo Asha Lham was blessed by the lake goddess and was gifted with a precious gem which was lost. It is the belief of the locals that the gem is hidden in the lake.

The lake water is believed to have curative properties and hence permitted to be used only for performing rites and rituals. From the surrounding hills, the lake appears like a Giant foot. There are contrasting legends that say it is the foot of Tara, Lord Shiva and Gautama.
